IB-P-GI-2025-034-Demolition Phase 1: Household Hazardous Waste Removal
The first phase of cleanup focuses on removing household hazardous waste from fire-affected areas, led by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under FEMA’s guidance. Teams began work on January 16, setting up temporary sites to safely dispose of hazardous materials. A California State order allows the EPA to access properties without owner consent for quicker cleanup. The removal of hazardous materials is free for all affected residents. Once completed, a placard will be placed on each property. The EPA has allocated $100 million for the effort, deploying over 500 personnel to assist. Household Hazardous Waste Fact Sheet
- Phase 2: Fire Debris Removal
- The second phase, a much larger effort, will be led by the Army Corps of Engineers with support from FEMA. After the EPA removes hazardous waste, the Corps will clear the remaining fire debris. Alternatively, homeowners can choose to opt out and contact us for assistance. March 31, 2025 is when opt out expires.
